We Turn to Scripture for Answers and Guidance to Walk Closer with God and Rebalance Our Health

The Apostle John wrote: “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world – the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life – is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” – 1 John 2:15-17

Imagine, if you will, trying to gain knowledge of God without Scripture to guide you. We learn about the One who made us by reading His Word, and rightly so. Better still, we know we’re able to find the answers to all of life’s problems in God’s Word. Yet when it comes to weight loss or improving health, who thinks of Scripture? Is this an area of man’s existence that God chose not to address?

As it turns out, there’s much to learn about health from God’s Word.

Biblical Truth

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.  Do not be conformed to this world.
Romans 12:1-2

Sanctify the Temple

To be sanctified means to be set apart. As Christians we are to be set apart – that is holy – and this means we must not conform to the world. Remember, as Jesus told us, we are in the world but not of the world.

But seeking God’s will and provision for your health is almost certain to put you at odds with the world.  All too often this will include friends who have only the best intentions.  “It’s just one doughnut” is something you may hear one day – it’s important to always maintain discernment.  Does this mean you never get to eat a doughnut again?  No, of course not.  It simply means you know what’s good for you and what’s not, and that doughnuts (among many, many other things) are not for your health and wellbeing but rather are indulgences that you know how to manage as part of your new lifestyle.

To be set apart does indeed lead to a different lifestyle, and you’ll quickly come to realize this as you feel better and better.  When your friends seem to be living their lives around doctor visits and various health conditions, you will rarely experience either.  When they’re down in the dumps, you have the bright outlook on life that is only natural to those who have been made in God’s image and likeness, and who honor Him by caring for their bodies.  We are indeed salt and light.

  • Biblical truths that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and He condescended to this Earth which was and is full of sin and ill repute to sacrifice Himself and be resurrected on the third day. These acts of pure love fullfilled every Old Testament prophecy about the coming Messiah and provides the only way for you to have eternal life with Him. The alternative is an eternity without the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
  • Scriptural understanding that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are all ONE God with separate functions of the Godhead. The Holy Spirit has been sent to us by God the Father to be our comfortor and our guide. Everything created by God including the foods we eat, the liquids we drink, the dirt under our feet, and the air we breathe has been corrupted and poisoned by Satan with the veil of goodness and care. Our job is to rebuke Satan and utilize God's provisions (just as He promised), the best we can, so that our body will return to vigor, the mind to calm, and our spirit to peace. These things are necessary so we can recognize and hear the Holy Spirit as He comforts and guides us toward God's path for our lives.
